Debbie Turner rose to stardom as one of the child stars who portrayed the iconic Von Trapp family in the legendary 1965 film, The Sound of Music.

Turner played Marta Von Trapp in the beloved film, which starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. While her acting career came to an eventual end, she went on to a highly successful career as a floral designer. That's what led her to the White House, where she helped President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump prepare their iconic home for Christmas in 2017.

"I have been a decorator for the White House for Christmas. That was a really neat experience — probably one of the most physically grueling and cool things I've ever done," Turner told PEOPLE in a new interview. "It was a week-long deal. It was me and 149 other designers that they put to task to do all these things to make the magic of Christmas at the White House happen. So I was just thrilled to be a part of that."

Turner went on to say that the First Lady is "actually the one who works with the lead person to put the White House together."

Decorating the White House for Christmas is No Minor Task

Turner went on to say that while decorating the White House for the holidays was "pretty amazing," she admitted that there were some intense moments.

"I had to go up on scaffolding. I almost fell and killed myself. It was really cool," she recalled. "The most proud moment of that house was doing the largest tree, which is in the Blue Room. They call it the People's Tree. And I got to decorate the People's Tree, which was kind of the centerpiece or the focal piece of the entire White House."

Several of The Sound of Music Child Stars Reunited in Salzburg

Turner stays in touch with several of her former Sound of Music child stars. Back in November, several of the former actors who rose to fame as the Von Trapp children reunited in Austria.

While the squad of actors was known for being adorable back when they sang alongside Andrews and Plummer in the iconic 1965 musical drama film, they looked better than ever during their reunion in 2025. Captured through a series of Instagram photos shared to their accounts, the legendary stars showed that they’ll always hold a place in our hearts.

In a photo shared online, Angela Cartwright, who played Brigitta in the film, is pictured next to Turner. Next to her is Kym Karath, who was only five years old when she rose to stardom as Gretl, the youngest member of the Von Trapp family.
