Manuel Turizo's new album Apambichao features slower Caribbean-inspired sounds, marking a shift from his urban pop roots

The Colombian star collaborated with Maluma on the title track and said it came about organically

The hit single "Por Un Pendejo No Se Llora" was inspired by a conversation where he's comforting a friend

On Manuel Turizo's new studio album Apambichao, the Colombian singer is setting the tone for a slowed-down summer.

The "La Bachata" hitmaker caught up with PEOPLE days before the release of Apambichao, which is a slower merengue, and he opened up about the album's inspiration, the success of "Por Un Pendejo No Se Llora" — and shared dating advice for men everywhere.

"I want people to feel like they're on vacation," Turizo, 26, says. "Go slower in life, be in the present, be in the moment and just chill."

The album is a reflection of the peace he found in 2025 — and none of it was planned. Apambichao, as opposed to his earlier discography that was urban pop-leaning, highlights sounds of the Carribean.

"I feel most happy when I'm just present, living in the moment," he says, for example, "hanging out with friends and doing cardio."

Turizo tapped fellow Colombian star Maluma for the title track of the album after first working together on his 2021 track "Amor en Coma."

"I feel the connection in the music was very genuine. In this song, we didn't even plan it. I started the idea with a friend of mine and I showed him the song. I didn't even know he showed Maluma and the day after he was like, 'Hey bro, Maluma loves this idea.'"

In January, Turizo teased the track "Por Un Pendejo No Se Llora" — which translates to "you don't cry over an idiot" — and his fans on social media instantly loved it. On Jan. 15, he released the song as the first single from the album.

"We wrote the song like we were talking to a friend," he says, explaining that he pictured a conversation where he gets a drunken call from one of his female friends — and she's crying over a man.

"Like, 'Really, one more?' Another call, but the same story," he says. "You cannot cry for an idiot."

On the topic of love, when it comes to his own life, Turizo says he can be quite the romantic.

"I feel like Colombian people in general are very romantic," he says. "We like to dedicate songs. We like to send flowers. I like to dedicate messages, poems, do special things," he says.

And while Turizo shared a piece of advice for women on "Por Un Pendejo No Se Llora," he also has advice for men trying to impress a woman.

"You have to take her to dance, you have to take her to a pretty place," he says. "It doesn't have to be somewhere expensive, just a pretty place, something special where you can just sit and talk and be with each other."

Ultimately, Turizo wants nothing more than for people to connect with the album.

"If you need music for your vacation, for summer, to chill in your free time, to listen to on your drive to work or when you're just preparing your food or working out, you should play Apambichao.
